As construction at The Metro continues steadily along, things are starting to take shape in the form of completed flooring, walls, windows, and more! Located at the intersection of Greenkill Avenue and South Prospect Street in Midtown, The Metro is a major project of NoVo in Kingston and is designed to support local youth as well as the broader Midtown community.
We’re thrilled to be making solid progress throughout the colder winter months, thanks to the hands-on work of PC Construction and the designs of Dutton Architecture. Construction is remaining on track, as well as ongoing design work, inspired by the Youth Design Team.
The kick-off of 2025 saw the completion of second-floor windows and glass installation. The buildings classical midcentury exterior was preserved, keeping its original character and well-known neighborhood look. So far, 3,500 square feet of triple pane glass have been installed, which weighs in at roughly 29,000 pounds of steel and glass! Work on the first floor has now begun and will continue into the springtime, with about 148 window units left to install.
The Metro’s second-floor sheetrock is also in progress, as well as sheetrock in all offices and multipurpose rooms. Similarly, the Fabrication Center sheetrock has begun. The installation of the Fabrication Center offices and workrooms will integrate a new roof underside that includes a custom-designed air and vapor barrier. This will enable a diverse array of Fabrication Center activities with the proper ventilation for metalsmithing, welding, and 3-D printing. In February, a second pour of 240-yards of concrete will take place, preparing the space for wall framing in the tenant and community spaces included in upcoming construction.
With all of this progress, an intention to keep construction environmentally friendly has remained a top priority. With 1,725 tons of waste produced, an impressive 1,706 tons of waste have been diverted from the landfill, including 1,678 tons of concrete and asphalt reused for subbase and backfill, 24 tons of metal recycled for reuse, 2 tons (4,000 pounds) of wood recycled,460 pounds of cardboard recycled to papermills for reuse, and 1.23 tons of other material recycled.
The team at NoVo in Kingston is thrilled to support bringing The Metro building back to a productive, community-centered use. Stay tuned for programming updates throughout 2025!
